Wheat availability increased when the support price was removed. FAO

Farmers who were unable to sell to the government released more quantities of wheat onto the open market, further driving down prices, as a result of the official purchases of wheat at the minimum support price being discontinued in 2024.

ISLAMABAD: Retail wheat flour prices in March showed mixed patterns and were much lower than they were in the previous year, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) Food Price Monitoring and Analysis. This was primarily due to the market’s abundance of supply from the record 2024 production.

According to the analysis, the price of wheat exports fell globally in March 2025 as well. Like maize, market mood was affected by decreased demand for Chinese imports as well as uncertainty over escalating global trade hostilities.

A 3% drop in Canadian quotations was caused by a preliminary prediction for 2025–2026 that showed an expansion in Canada’s wheat area, in addition to the uncertainties surrounding the United States’ tariff revisions. A 3% drop in the benchmark US values was also caused by indications of better crop conditions in the US.

According to the research, Australian prices fell 3% in March as a result of pressure from the declines in North American prices, which also affected competitors in Asian markets.

The arrival of seasonal supplies from the Southern Hemisphere, a decline in the demand for imports worldwide, and a reduction in concerns about crop production in certain key exporters all contributed to the declines in grain prices worldwide.
